Griffey Deserves Better...
What a sad state Major League Baseball has come into. A huge milestone is about to be reached by one of its stars and its as though nobody is paying attention. Ken Griffey Jr. is about to become just the sixth player in major league baseball history to hit 600 home runs and it should be a much bigger deal than it is. Even though he is approaching history he is continually overshadowed by other happenings throughout the league (all of which should be taking a back seat to Griffey). There are many factors as to why there is not a big to do about this. One would have to point toward this being the "steroid era" playing a part in the apathy towards this feat. In my opinion though the biggest factor is the media. More attention has been given to Manny Ramirez hitting his 500th home run than Griffey can ever hope to get. It doesnt hurt that Manny plays in Boston and the ESPN "reporters" are very fond of big market teams (you would be hard pressed to find an ESPN nationally televised game that doesnt involve a team from New York, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, or Detroit). But the fact that Griffey plays in Cincinnati should play no part in this. In my opinion, Griffey is the the greatest player of the last 25 years or so. Yes he is injury prone, but look at what he has accomplished in spite of those injuries. They can only make you wonder...What would a healthy Griffey's numbers look like? I dare say, i think Bonds wouldnt even be mentioned in the same breath as a healthy Griffey. I said it, he's better than Bonds just by the fact that Bonds' steroid use diminishes from his accomplishments. Which brings me to maybe my most important point, not only is Griffey a great player, he plays and has always played the game with class. His name is not brought up in any negative light, there is no controversy surrounding him, and he is nothing but humble on the field. He is a genuine class act, but todays media doesnt care for class, they want controversy. People need to forget about steroids in baseball for a moment because this is probably one of the few baseball milestones in recent memory thats steroid free. Its time people out there start to realize how great accomplishment this is, not just the 600 home runs, but 600 home runs by a classy player in todays day and age.
